I am often asked if I feel competent to teach my kids through high school. I do feel competent to find the best methods and teachers to teach what I cannot. I thought that Physics was out of my son’s reach until I had the opportunity to review Fascinating Physics.
Fascinating Education goes beyond regular textbook learning to help middle and high school students to learn biology, chemistry and physics. These courses are taught by Dr. Margulies, a retired neurologist that understands how people’s brains works and thus, how they learn best. In fact, he practices as an expert witness in the field of neurology. The courses are taught with the “right brain” approach, which means rather than reading a textbook, the student is taught by illustrations and engages the student interactively. We loved that it actually shows how the concepts are applied in real life situations so the “Why do I have to learn this?” was never was asked.
The course contains three elements – a video of the lesson, a script of the lesson and the test which can be either completed online or printed out. You are given a secondary password as the parent to access a PDF version of the test and the answer key.
There are fifteen lessons in this course and are as follows:
- Circular Motion
- Fluids and Gases
- Light Part I
- Light Part II
- Light Part III
- Electrical Charges
- Moving Electrical Charges
- Electrical Currents
- The Atom
- The Nucleus
The lessons remind me of PowerPoint presentations. They are done in animated slides (for example, the first lesson contains thirty-eight slides which was one of the longest lessons) which makes it very easy to follow along with the script if you need to look back to find information or if you want to highlight portions of the lesson rather than taking notes.
At first, I required my son to complete a lesson in one setting. Lucky for him, I decided I wanted to do this course with him and it soon became apparent that one lesson was a little too much information. We varied how much we did each day. There is a lot of information covered! The program remembered where we left off so it was easy to just pick up the next time we signed on. I usually just set a timer because we would often pause the video to discuss what we were learning.
After each lesson, there is a test. (Lessons 14 and 15 have a combined test.) Dr. Margulies believes that testing should be used as a tool to reinforce learning (which I agree with!). You have the option of taking the test online or having a parent print it out. If you take the online test and get stumped, you have the ability to watch a small clip as a hint. After watching the hint, you are returned back to the question to resume the test. Also, you receive immediate results of the test; for the printed version, you can print out an answer key which not only give the correct answer but an explanation of it so if you got it incorrect, you can read the answer to understand where you made a mistake.
Prior to taking this Physics course, it is recommended that you be able to understand higher math concepts. We found that the formulas used are very well explained so that if you forgot or have not yet covered those concepts, it can easily be learned to be able to complete the formulas needed for the lesson. Remembering the formulas was my son’s biggest challenge but being able to easily navigate within the lesson and/or having the script handy, it was easy to find.
What we liked best about this course was real life applications. In the very first chapter, we learned how the temperature of a corpse can help you determine the time of death. For a family that that has always been intrigued with forensic science, this was a great way to grab my son’s interest in this course right from the beginning! The course is little “heavy” and I tried to find some experiments online to help break up the lectures, but this is physics and definitely a high school course. I think the course is very thorough and covers what needs to be taught. I think it is great preparation for what my son might experience in college.
Please note that this is not Creation based and the “Big Bang Theory” is discussed a little in the first lesson. It just made a great discussion opportunity for us 🙂
Intrigued? You can view a sample lesson here. The sample lesson is about Light.
You can enjoy a full year access to this course for only $79. If you would like to add another course, you can have access to two for $125, or access to all three courses for $175.
