I started dabbling in cake decorating almost twenty years ago. I was looking for a way to make some extra money after baby number three arrived. I mostly decorated cakes for friends and family and made the cakes for a monthly birthday club at a local business. Then we moved and my kitchen did not inspire me to bake at all. Cake decorating to me is art. I can’t do it when I have a deadline, or stressed, or a demanding customer. But I really, really admire those that can. I don’t decorate nearly as much any more but I love to watch all of the shows and still browse photos of what’s popular right now.
About the Book
Great Cake Decorating: Sweet Designs for Cakes & Cupcakes is a inspiration to all bakers. It contains information that will be helpful to beginners (measurement equivalents, how to transport a cake, etc.) and recipes that even advanced cake decorators will enjoy. There are many beautiful illustrations. I especially loved that she gives different flavor combinations that can be made with the base recipes she provides. The book covers buttercream and fondant in detail. If you want to cake decorate and could only purchase one book, this is the one I would recommend.
I made the Vanilla Chiffon Cake recipe with Vanilla Swiss Meringue Buttercream. Between the layers, I used the recipe for Lemon Curd. (My first time making my own lemon curd…Oh. My. Goodness. Delish!! Never will buy it again!)
