There is no better way to spend family time than gathered around playing games together. It stimulates real conversation, is fun and the love of competition fuels my family. And that’s why I am always on the lookout for new games for us to play. In fact, every August, our family goes on a media fast and we do not watch any movies or play video games. During this time, we get a lot of use out of our games. When I was offered a chance to review two games from USAopoly, I was excited. And it was perfect timing because I received the games during our media fast!! For this review, I received Tapple: Fast Word Fun for Everyone and Wonky: The Crazy Cubes Card Game.
Tapple: Fast Word Fun for Everyone
This game was so much fun. I love all word games!! All you need to do to prepare for the game is to insert 2 AA batteries in the “tapple”. (Tapple stands for “Touch Activated Press & Play Letter Eliminator”. Whew! Glad I only need to say “tapple”.) Then just removed the 36 category cards that are conveniently stored in the bottom. The cards are two-sided, one side has easier categories for younger players and the other side is a little more challenging. Now, it’s time to play.
A category card is chosen. The purpose of the game is to name items that fit in the given category until all letters have been pushed down. The trick is to name something with a letter that has not yet been pushed down withing 10 seconds or a buzzer sounds and you lose that round. The last player left wins that category card. Collect three (or how many your group decides on) category cards to win the entire game.
This game is for 2 to 8 players, ages 8 and older.
Wonky: The Crazy Cubes Card Game
This game is fun and CHALLENGING! Who would think that simply stacking nine blocks on top of each other could prove to be so difficult? Well, when the cubes are not really cubes it can be well….wonky. Some of the sides are curved and some slanted. And that’s what makes it interesting!
To play this game, everyone gets 7 cards. On your turn, you must play one of the cards in your hand. The cards tell you which color/size block you need to place on the building tower. Wild cards let you choose. There’s also cards that allow you to pass or reverse direction of play. To win, you must play all of the cards in your hand, with the last card requiring you to place a block on the tower OR be the first person to place the ninth block on the stack. And the block has to remain at least three seconds before toppling over.
The challenge is not only the blocks are wonky but since you are required to play every card in your hand, you might just have a card asking you to place a block that someone might have already used during a wild play. This means you might have to purposefully knock down the tower to the block that you need. Knocking down the tower results in a penalty of drawing more cards and now you have to play all of those before someone else does what it takes to win.
This game is for 2 or more players, ages 8 and older.
Both games were a blast!!! I would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite but I typically learn more toward word games. My youngest son’s favorite was definitely Wonky but of course that might be because he has the steadiest hand!! Be sure to check out all of the games that USAopoly has to offer.
