(For a complete index of 31 days, check out Day 1)
This is a very timely post seeing that I’ve been suffering from a cold/sinus/allergy issues lately!
List the ways you treat a cold…
1. Obviously, Vitamin C. It’s supposed to be better taken with rose hips. I take chewable pills and also eat a lot of oranges and grapefruit.
2. Chayote. This is a type of squash that is extremely high in vitamin C. I think anyway. All I know is a met a Spanish lady once who told me she eats it raw to knock out a cold. You can also cook it. Personally, I make a huge pot of chicken noodle soup and add diced chayote to it.
3. Garlic. Not only do I put it in the soup but if you have chest congestion, I’ll let you in on a secret. Take several garlic cloves and crush them with the flat side of a butter knife. All you want to do is release the juices. Now, put all that garlic in a small glass jar. Plastic might be fine too. Cover it with olive oil. Let it steep. At least 48 hours but the longer, the better. Before you go to bed, rub the olive oil generously over the bottom of your feet, get between the toes too. Now, put some socks on and lay down and go to sleep. The garlic has great medicinal qualities and since the skin is thinner on the bottom of your feet it is absorbed, travels to your lungs and rests there to do its magic. I especially like this because it’s safe for babies where most cold/congestion medicines have been removed from the pharmaceutical shelves.
4. Steam. I get a big pot of water and fill it with all kinds of goodies – cayenne pepper, dried chamomile flowers, eucalyptus, echinacea, and whatever other herbs I have on hand that would help with congestion. Then right before it gets to that boiling state, cover your head with a towel (like a tent over you) and deeply breath in the steam.
I’m also a big fan of echinacea tinctures that I make and Vapor Rub. I even put Vapor Rub all around my ears and down the sides of my neck when the fluid builds up in my ears due to head congestion.
