What does a snowman, a sponge and a diary have in common? Well, they all worked together to make some great memories during one of our family game nights.
My family loves games and while we don’t have a regularly scheduled game night (we did try that route), when I break out a game, the kids all gather around to play. We have a Christmas tradition to add at least one new game each year. Christmas came a little early when Out of the Box Games allowed me to review Snake Oil Party Potion. The game was a perfect fit for our family.

Out of the Box has been making games since 1998 and has won awards in the world of games. Snake Oil Party Potion has won eight awards, including Mensa Mindgames. They make innovative games that are quick to learn, fun to play and can be finished in less than an hour.
Snake Oil – Party Potion
Here’s what you need to know at a glance:
- ages 8 and up (younger if they can read)
- 3 – 6 players
- only takes 5 minutes to learn
- a game can be completed in 30 minutes
My youngest son is seven and did struggle with some of the words but we just helped him with the reading. Thirty minutes??? Well….sometimes our games lasted a little longer than that. But my family likes to talk. A lot. And we decided it would be fun to add a little something. But who really looks at the clock when you are having this much fun?
So, why “Snake Oil”? Here’s a little history lesson for you. There were Chinese laborers working on the Transcontinental Railroad in 1860’s. After a hard day’s work, they would use a herbal remedy of water snake oil to soothe their aches and pains. Soon the benefits became exaggerated and salesmen were giving false promises. The US government stepped in, ran some tests on one of the snake oil tinctures only to find that there was no actual snake oil in it. Now the phrase “snake oil” refers to any salesperson that make unsubstantiated claims.
How to Play
The rules are very simple. Remember, learn to play in 5 minutes or less? Basically each player gets six Word cards. They combine two of those cards to create an item to sell to the Customer. One player gets to be the Customer and the other players make a sales pitch to them. The Customer chooses which one makes the best sales pitch and gives their Customer card to the winner. Then you rotate to next player to be the next Customer, Word cards are given to replace those that were just played and the game starts again. Once everyone has been the Customer, the one with the most Customer cards wins.
We loved this game. My entire family has great imaginations and loved selling. Turned out no one wanted to be the Customer to up the game a little, we let the Customer create a “profile”. When you were the Customer, you had to expand a little and tell a bit about yourself then each seller tried to make their “item” a tailor fit for you and your story.
Oh, and you have the option to cut off any sales pitch that lasts too long. Yeah, we had too much fun and never did that either.
I will say….I think my son might have a future as a Snake Oil salesman.
This Party potion has a suggested retail price of $14.99. There is a full version for more advanced readers (you can combine the two) that is also available. Read the reviews for both products by clicking on the banner below.
