I love books. I love reading myself and I love to share books with others. I especially love to share good books with my children. A great way to make sure that they really get the book is to use a study guide. Progeny Press offers some of the best study guides I have ever used and we were thrilled to receive the one for Miss Rumphius.
About the Product
The study guide for Miss Rumphius is designed for lower elementary grades (K-3rd). This 43 page study guide is available as a digital download. The actual book that is to be read is not included but we found a copy very easily at our local library.
How We Used It
The guide covers some before you read activities and we did those first. There are some Bible verses about planning and also some questions and activities to do regarding seeds. It was very easy for us to look at seeds since I had just purchased sunflower seeds to sprout and all summer we have been saving seeds from our garden. My son loves science shows and immediately answered the various ways seeds can travel.
Then we read the book.
Miss Rumphius is an award winning book that tells the story of a little girl named Alice. She spent time with her grandfather who lived by the sea and she would help him in his shop. At night, she would climb upon his lap has he would tell her stories of all of the faraway places that he visited. Alice told him that when she grew up, she wanted to travel to faraway places and then live by the sea. Her grandfather told her there was one more thing she must do – she must do something the make the world a more beautiful place.
Alice grows up and travels. She meets interesting people and sees lots of new things.
When Miss Rumphius traveled to an island, she was given coconut water to drink straight from a green coconut.
I could not find any real coconuts but did have coconut milk on hand for Jeremiah to try.
After her travels, she moves to a house by the sea. She still has one more promise left to fulfill – she needs to do something to make the world more beautiful. Miss Rumphius was not feeling well but could look out her window and see the lupines growing and their pretty colors would lift her spirits. When spring arrives, and she feels better, she goes for a walk and sees that the lupine seeds have been scattered around the hillside. She decides to purchase a bunch of seeds and she scatters them everywhere so people can enjoy the beautiful flowers.
The study guide has questions after you finish reading the book that ensures comprehension. There’s also some great ideas for hands-on activities (like drinking coconut water/milk) and painting skies and water. I love that not only is the story discussed but there’s also discussion for the illustrations.
We love study guides from Progeny Press!!! The book was very enjoyable and we would definitely recommend them.
