I remember about fifteen years or so ago, Winter Jam tour came to Greensboro, NC. We lived near there at that time. I’ve always loved going to concerts and taking the kids became a tradition. When I heard that Winter Jam showcases several Christian artists for one low price, I was ecstatic!! My family has been enjoying Winter Jam concerts almost annually since that time. I even went two weeks before Jeremiah was due. He loved it!! He kept kicking and “dancing” in my belly for the whole concert!!
Since we moved to Florida we have to travel just a little bit further to go to Winter Jam but it’s so worth it that I won’t complain. My kids and I look forward to it all year long.
Here’s how it works:
Winter Jam concerts have been going on for 20 years now!! I can’t believe it. It started off only $3 a ticket and now is only $10. Not bad at all for all of the performers you get to hear. You cannot purchase the tickets in advance so it is first come, first serve. We usually pack a lunch and some cards and prepare to get in line a few hours early. Usually, there’s a Christian radio station that is there running promotions outside and you get a chance to win some great prizes. In the past, we’ve won some t-shirts and CD’s. You also meet some pretty cool people standing near you and they might even join in a Rummy game or two.
When the doors open, it gets a little crazy. Remember, there’s no advance tickets? That means when the doors open and you pay your $10, you run for the best seats you can find. Lucky for me, all of my kids can run now so I’m not dragging a toddler behind. (I will say that although I’ve always taken my kids, I do make my little ones wear ear protection because depending on what seats you get, it can get pretty loud.) This year, we got a late start and seats were up behind the stage. You could still hear great!! And definitely worth much more than $10 a ticket!
This year’s lineup did not disappoint!!
- For King and Country
- Family Force 5
- Building 429
- Jeremy Camp
- Francesca Battistelli
- and new comers – About a Mile and Veridia.
- with special speaker Tony Nolan
The concert was amazing with fantastic light shows. If there was any complaint, it would just be that it would last longer. Wouldn’t it be great if each artist could sing a complete hour set? Okay…then it definitely would have to be an all day event. But I’m all for that!!
I love the heart of the artists. They take Winter Jam as an opportunity to really connect with their fans. I remember a few years ago, Brandon Heath was part of the tour. Of course, the venue got sold out and fans had to be turned away. Some of our youth group didn’t make it in and stayed outside where they could still hear the concert some. Brandon went outside and saw fans still hanging around, talked with them for awhile and gave them a little mini concert right there in the parking lot. This year, Family Force 5 even tweeted where they would be hanging out after the concert so fans could meet them. Unfortunately, early work was calling and that was not an option for us.
The most touching part of the concert though was when Tony Nolan spoke on behalf of Holt International Organization. Holt is the largest international adoption agency. His own testimony begins with his birth mother being advised to terminate the pregnancy (she was a patient in a mental hospital.) She opted not to and after Tony was born he went through a series of foster care homes and suffered abuse. He told of his own story. He decided he wanted to meet his birth mother who was dying, still in the mental hospital. As he told his birth mother that he became a preacher and tells people about Jesus, her eyes cleared and she told him that a voice told her not to abort him. Tony definitely has a heart for orphans and the passion to see changes in the lives of these children.
Winter Jam is a great affordable way for families to have fun together and you never have to worry about the lyrics you will hear. The artists are always top-notch and the price is a bargain. Right now, Family Christian even has most of the Winter Jam artists’ CDs on sale for only $5!!
Disclaimer: Family Christian provided me with two tickets to Winter Jam 2015 in exchange for this review. No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.
